Prince William and Kate Middleton Trip to Canada

Prince William and Kate Middleton Trip to Canada

Prince William and Kate Middleton embarked Friday on the second day of their 11-day tour of Canada, their first royal trip together.

First the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge stopped at the National War Memorial in Ottawa to lay a wreath and pay tribute to the Canadian Armed Forces. As reported by People.com, the crowd handed Kate flowers and gifts and enthusiastically shouted, "We want Kate!"

"Thank you so much," she said. "We are so delighted to be here." As she waited for William to finish his walkabout, Kate chatted with Prime Minister Stephen Harper and his wife, saying, "That was so amazing, there were so many people there … How many do you think? We have been on the go since 7:30 this morning so it's been a long day."

Next, they headed to a welcome event in Ottawa at Rideau Hall, the official home of the country's governor general. William, alternating between French and English (joking that his French, "will improve as we go on,"), said that the couple was impressed with the terrain and cordiality of our neighbors to the north.

"The geography of Canada is unsurpassed and is famous for being matched only by the hospitality of its people. We are so very excited about having this opportunity to experience both – and learn much more about this amazing country," he said.

The royal couple later attended an

evening barbecue

where they met young Canadians who were making contributions to their communities. The evening's menu showed off dishes from throughout Canada, including Yukon Arctic char caviar, Winnipeg smoked goldeye and Prince Edward Island cheddar parfait, and Banks Island Muskox prosciutto with Alberta cheese crackling.

For the event, Kate chose a casual, black and white patterned Issa design, paired with wedge-style sandals. She also showed support for Canadian designers earlier in the day by wearing such items as a navy blazer by Toronto-based Smythe les Vestes and a navy lace dress by Erdem Moralioglu, who was born in Montreal.

Meanwhile, back home in London, people were paying tribute to William's mother, Princess Diana, on what would have been her 50th birthday on Friday. Cakes, candles, cards and other tributes were being left outside the gates of Kensington Palace, where Diana lived before she was killed in a 1997 car crash at age 36.
